When news filtered through several days ago, that Baltimore released the star safety because of an altercation with a teammate. Attention quickly turned to where the 7x Pro Bowler and Super Bowl XLVII champion would end up.
Having previously been in the market for Thomas the Cowboys shot straight to the top of the list of potential landing spots. It has divided opinion among Cowboy nation as to whether they should attempt to sign the veteran safety.
During his Monday press conference head coach Mike McCarthy was asked about the possibility of his team signing the talented yet troubled safety. The head coach said that so far in training camp he has liked what he has seen out of his safety group, in particular Xavier Woods who is a now a four-year veteran with the Cowboys.
Dallas does have decent depth at safety which includes recently signed Ha Ha Clinton-Dix who played under McCarthy in Green Bay, Donovan Wilson and Darian Thompson along with rookie Luther Kick. “Everything is looked at,” McCarthy said, “but at the end of the day, the main question you have to ask is, ‘How does a player fit in your locker room?'” and that tells me that signing Thomas is not high on the to do list in the mind of the Dallas head coach. However, as most fans know the final say comes down solely to Jerry Jones and if Jerry wants Earl Thomas then Jerry WILL get his man, even if it is to the detriment of his teams’ cohesion.
Adding a player like Earl Thomas would be huge in terms of talent on the defensive side of the ball and would no doubt give the Cowboys secondary some serious star power. Would it be worth it? He would command a serious payday and take a sizeable chunk out of the salary cap and with Dak Prescott’s contract front and centre, could Jerry and Stephen Jones make it work?
Then there are his indiscretions. He was a troubled soul at the end of his Seahawks tenure and seemed to be settling into life at the Ravens until this latest issue arose. As we know Dallas and Jerry Jones like to be in the headlines and signing Earl Thomas would certainly be a big headline. Would it make the Cowboys defence better? No doubt about it at all. Would it ultimately be worth it? As someone who is on the fence on this, having Earl Thomas on the roster would seriously boost the Cowboys Super Bowl hopes and put them right at the pointy end of the conversation.
After hearing Mike McCarthy speak, I would be just fine if signing him did not eventuate and all in all it would probably be a good move to pass, but a player of Earl Thomas calibre does not come around very often and Dallas would be fools not to at least consider the idea. Could you just imagine the kind of hype that would surround the Dallas Cowboys if they added Earl Thomas to their roster and the possibility of Dallas being in the Super Bowl window this year would come to realization for its fan base.
McCarthy was hesitant, Jerry likes the idea and Thomas is a free agent. What happens next could very well thrust Dallas into Super Bowl contention and make them a serious threat. Will it happen? It sure is fun to think about the possibilities, but I have my doubts about how serious the Cowboys interest in Earl Thomas actually is at this point.
