The ‘Patriot Way’ – Many NFL teams have tried to figure out the secret to the Patriots’ success during Bill Belichick’s tenure. They hoped they would catch a glimpse of the secret by hiring one of his assistants, but results have been mixed. Consequently, the ’secret’ has remained a mystery—until now.

Lamar Miller has shared the ‘secret’ with the world. While he did say the Patriots do things a little differently compared to everyone else, the X factor is nothing special and something every team could easily emulate.

Conditioning.

Miller, who signed with the Patriots last month, was asked recently what the difference has been compared to the other teams:

“I’d say the conditioning part. Since I’ve been in the league, I’ve never ran that much. It was just different for me. They make sure you’re in top, great shape. That’s something I haven’t experienced.”

As simple as it sounds, it actually makes a lot of sense. It is not unusual to hear about guys failing their conditioning tests when training camp starts every year. What those tests are, vary from one team to the next. We don’t know what kind of conditioning teams do during training camp or the season, either.

Since, at this point, guys are professionals getting paid a ton of money to play a game, the expectation may be that they take care of conditioning on their own time. That way, they can focus on becoming better football players during practice.

If that was the case, it could also explain why they have conditioning tests. Prove your good to go, and then you can practice. But it sounds like the Patriots don’t quit or slow down their conditioning work once practice gets underway.

When you consider things like their miracle comeback in the Super Bowl against the Atlanta Falcons a few years ago, that makes sense.
