Chiefs blew out the Texans
The Kansas City Chiefs blew out the Houston Texans in the opening game of the NFL season at Arrowhead. The final score is a little bit misleading with the Chiefs leading 24-7 going into the last quarter before putting the cue in the rack, despite scoring 10 points in the last.
Both teams started off a little rusty with the Texans going 3 and out on their first possession and the Chiefs only managing 21 yards in 8 plays before being forced to punt.
On the Texans next possession Desaun Watson led them on a 9 play 80-yard drive which was capped off with a 19 -yard rushing touchdown to David Johnson to give the Texans a 7-0 lead. The Chiefs then answered in kind with Patrick Mahomes taking the Chiefs on a 11 play 75- yard drive that was finished by finding Travis Kelce in the endzone to level the scores at 7-7.
That was as good as it got for the Texans, forced to punt on their next possession then Super Bowl MVP Mahomes went 86 yards in 11 plays that took 9 minutes off the clock and finished off with a 2-yard TD pass to Sammy Watkins. Houston then proceeded to go on an 11-play drive to get into field goal range, only to miss the resulting kick from 51 yards. The Chiefs got the ball back and went 28 yards in 25 seconds to set up a field goal attempt which they converted and took a 17-7 lead into half time.
Kansas City got the ball to start the third and took full advantage, going 80 yards in 7 plays before rookie back Edwards-Helaire rushed for a 27-yard touchdown to basically end the game as a contest with the score at 24-7. Both sides were then forced to punt on their next possessions before Watson was intercepted by L’Jarius Sneed for 39 yards to set the Chiefs up in great field position.
Mahomes took full advantage finding Tyreek Hill for a 3-yard TD to move the lead out to 31-7 and it was game over. With the Texans having to go for it, they went on a 75-yard, 10 play drive before Jordan Atkins was found by Watson in the end zone to make the scoreboard a little more respectable at 31-13. From their the Chiefs sailed through until the Texans went 65 yards before Watson found the endzone himself to close the gap to 11 points.
However, needing the ball back, Houston went for an onside kick which the Chiefs collected and got them into field goal range, and they converted to make it a 2-score game at 34-20 and that was it.
Mahomes finished with 211 yards and 3 TD’s, rookie back Clyde Edwards-Helaire had a debut to remember rushing for 138 yards and a touchdown, while Sammy Watkins was the best receiver, amassing 80 yards on 7 targets and a TD too. Desaun Watson finished with 253 yards with a TD and interception with Will Fuller having a good night out, going for 112 yards on his 8 targets.
This was what most expected, the Chiefs to flex their offensive muscle and boy did they do just that. Stars everywhere as they accounted for the Texans easily. It was a good start to their Super Bowl defence while the Texans will have to go back to the drawing board and improve before they tackle the Ravens in week 2.
How good was it to finally have football back!
